About Us

The Xavier Research Foundation (XRF) Trust runs the Loyola Centre for Research and Development (LCRD), an autonomous institute established in the year 1987 in a small laboratory in St. Xavier’s College. It now exists as an independent unit in the Xavier’s campus with around 12 state-of-the-art modular laboratories, a Green House, a Cactus House, and other amenities for computers and research. Its goal is to do research in science and technology and the humanities. The Centre does not only employ scientific staff dedicated to research, but also provides infrastructural support and expertise to students working on frontline research fields in environmental microbiology and plant biotechnology.

The Loyola Centre for Research and Development from its earliest years was envisaged as an autonomous research centre with a multi-disciplinary thrust. The founding body, moreover, were driven by their values to envision it as a centre that would through research address poverty alleviation through small technologies enabling sustainable livelihoods. The mission of the Centre is to target grass root communities on the fringes of our economy; and through innovation, entrepreneurship, training and handholding set up production units of a medium, small and micro level.

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME, Government of India), has recognized XRF as a Business Incubator (XRF-BI) under the scheme “Support for Entrepreneurial and Managerial Development of SMEs through Incubators”. The objective of this scheme is to establish bioscientific start-ups which can flourish into independent companies in future.

The Centre has been accorded Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) recognition by the Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Besides, the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Gandhinagar has accorded recognition to LCRD as a recognized research centre of the University for the purpose of conducting research.

Recently, a patent has been granted to XRF for the invention “METHOD FOR DELAYING RIPENING OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES” in accordance with the provisions of the Patents Act,1970.
